Card Game
Caissa’s Revenge is a card game for two players based on the Royal Game of Chess. The title comes from a story in which the goddess, Caissa, tries to destroy the game forever. She is stopped, but this card game is her revenge on all chess players – by making it a game of skill and chance rather than simply a game of skill.
As a chess teacher and tournament player, I’ve loved the game of chess since my father taught it to me as a child. When I was blessed with a family, I taught my children to play. I have taught the game to countless youth, teens, and adults while running chess clubs all over the US.
Caissa’s Revenge was born from my teacher’s heart as a way to help new players (especially young ones) learn some of the basics of the game while having a lot of fun. Caissa’s Revenge uses piece values, chess terms, and chess imagery and something new to Chess – “luck.” I created a prototype and shared it with friends and family. I figured it was a keeper when a young friend came to the chess club a month later with a handmade version using construction paper…he liked the prototype so much that he made his own. Children who were just learning chess could learn to play it in minutes, the youngest being four-years-old, and were able to compete with their parents.
